What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the systematic optimization of a company to be mentioned, cited, and recommended in the responses of AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. While SEO targets rankings in search results, GEO targets the response itself, aiming for the three to five providers that an AI names when a buyer asks for a solution.
Why GEO is now crucial
Pre-purchase research is shifting from traditional search to AI-generated answers. Instead of ten blue links, buyers receive a complete answer with only a few mentioned providers and sources.
For companies, this means that those who do not appear in these answers do not exist for the buyer. The pre-selection of which provider a customer contacts is increasingly made before they even visit a website.

How AI Assistants Decide Whom to Recommend
AI assistants do not invent their recommendations. Candidates are sourced from three locations, and two factors determine which ones are recommended.
Training Expertise
What the model has learned about your company, your industry, and your competitors.Live Search
For current queries, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini search the web in real time and read individual pages completely.Source Selection
From the retrieved content, the system selects the statements to quote and the providers to reference.Factual consistency
AI assistants cross-reference statements across multiple sources. Businesses that publish consistent facts on their website, in directories, and in the press are deemed reliable. Inconsistencies weaken recommendations.Machine readability
What AI crawlers cannot read does not exist for the response. Blocked bots and a lack of structure lead to exclusion before the content is even evaluated.
GEO vs. SEO: What is changing
GEO does not replace SEO. A technically sound, content-rich website remains the foundation, as AI systems read the same sources. The new layer is the level above, and in Switzerland, it remains unclaimed by most companies.
| GEO vs. SEO: What is changing | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Link list position | Mention in AI response |
| Success metric | Ranking, clicks, traffic | Share of AI responses mentioning your brand |
| Content Strategy | Keywords and Backlinks | Directly citable answers, data, and comparisons |
| Place of operation | Your Online Presence | Website plus directories, trade media, profiles |
| Result for the buyer | They click and compare for themselves | You will receive a shortlist with a recommendation. |
What GEO specifically comprises
Baseline Audit
Measurement of which buyer queries AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot currently name your company in, which competitors appear, and which sources support the answers.Citable content
Pages that directly answer buyer questions: definitions, comparisons, pricing, and data. Structured to enable AI systems to easily extract individual statements.Technical readability
Clean site structure, structured data (Schema.org), and signals like llms.txt ensure machines understand your offerings and target audience.Source research in the market
Directories, trade media, profiles, and reviews used by AI systems as sources are systematically developed and maintained.Corrections
False statements about your company will be traced back to their source and corrected.
Target audience for GEO
GEO is valuable wherever customers research and compare before purchasing: for complex products, services, and B2B decisions. In the Swiss market, this particularly affects SMEs whose buyers ask questions such as "Which provider for X in region Y?". The rule is that specific beats broad. A clearly defined service area with verifiable specialization is an advantage in AI answers, not a disadvantage.
